Fashion Institute of Technology Students Design and Fabricate “Best New Product Awards” Display for National Stationery Show
WHITE PLAINS, NY (April 14, 2016) — The National Stationery Show® (NSS) and the School of Art and Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), State University of New York (SUNY), have collaborated on a special design for the Show’s popular Best New Product Awards display that will be in the Crystal Palace at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center throughout the NSS, May 15 – 18, 2016. FIT students will also attend the event.
Twenty-five students enrolled in the In-Store Design course in the Visual Presentation and Exhibition Design (VPED) program at FIT were challenged to develop a design that satisfied all of the merchandise and special needs of the NSS. The students created concept books to the specifications for structural components, materials, and graphic package and signage. They were also required to make an animated version of their design for presentation purposes.
“We structured this project as if it was a professional real world design challenge,” said Reginald Keith Rogers, assistant adjunct professor, FIT. The designer relationship with the NSS was encouraged through constant communication and setting a very high standard for client satisfaction. The project created the ideal platform for the students to design in a professional environment and challenged their ability to design, fabricate, and execute a product display for multiple brands in many categories.”
“We are thrilled to affiliate the NSS with such a renowned program, and even more to provide FIT students such invaluable commercial exposure,” said Patti Stracher, vice president and Show Director. “The Best New Product Awards display is an extremely popular lobby feature. The FIT students’ work will elevate the quality of visual merchandising and product presentation and is the perfect addition to the dynamic atmosphere we’re creating this year as we celebrate 70 years of the NSS.”
“The professional relationship between the client and student designer is demonstrated within several design phases of this project, from student/client presentation to on-site installation of the exhibit. As an educator, having an ideal teaching aid that focuses on the core strengths of the VPED curriculum brings further value to the students’ experience at FIT,” added Rogers. “The level of design is comparable to any professional standard required for a project of this scope.”
Stracher agreed. “The level of emerging talent is sensational,” she said.
