Never did I suspect that answering a classified ad in the New York Times
would so shape my life and career ... but that's exactly what happened to me! 1997 found me working at a major book publisher in New York — though not for long. It was an open secret that the illustrated book division in which I worked was being closed shortly, so every day I checked the Times
for interesting help wanted ads.
I well remember how one ad (among dozens and dozens I applied for) jumped out from the start: a trade magazine focused on the home and gift market was looking for a trends editor. I sent my resume, landed an interview — and as part of my "test," had to write my very first product page. It was on Autumn Candles, my headline was "Fall for Candles." I got hired, and started working as Stationery Editor at Gifts & Decorative Accessories
in May 1997. I remember the task given to me on my first day so that I could get acquainted with the market: Go through an enormous filing cabinet filled with catalogs, greeting card samples and other stationery ephemera, all placed there without much rhyme or reason. It was fascinating to me — and really was a fitting introduction to this crazy industry.
Twenty years later, I'm still plugging away covering stationery — and loving every minute of it. In 2008, I had the amazing opportunity to launch a then-new stationery trade, Stationery Trends
with Great American Media Services and was lucky enough to be able to so in a design-oriented as opposed to typical trade format. There is so much going on that I can't fit into the publication, and, wanting to join the digital conversation, I launched my passion project, the blog ThePaperChronicles.com
in 2013. I see my mission as keeping letter-writing, card-sending and invitation using alive, but also, and just as importantly — helping to empower makers and retailers to succeed. Over the years, many have become close friends, and there is no experience for me like National Stationery Show. The excitement in the air is palpable, and discovering gorgeous new product and hobnobbing with friends old and new — year in and year out, it's an experience without parallel!Want more Stationery Stories?
